With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the stores are filling up with chocolates and other sugary treats. Schools often have Valentine’s Day celebrations where kids exchange cards and candy in lieu of the holiday. While kids may get a sugar rush from the treats exchanged at school, celebrating at home can be a healthy and fun experience by taking advantage of creative ideas that share the spirit of the holiday, but do not require any extra calories.
Go online and print off activity pages with a Valentine’s Day theme and have kids color and draw cards for family members and friends. This will get the kids engaged in a healthy activity while helping them use their creativity to make small gifts for loved ones.
Take a family hike or hold a picnic with healthy Valentine themed foods that everyone can enjoy without gaining extra pounds.
Invite your children’s friends over for a Valentine’s Day party and have them go outside and play some games that can get them active and engaged. Decorate the house with some paper hearts and red, pink and white decorations to make the party festive. Getting kids to join in on the decorating is also a fun way to enjoy the holiday as a family.
